What do we do?

We make your business look the way you want it to look. That simple!

From start-ups to established businesses, Jabu has helped hundreds of companies get on the right track to successful marketing. We start by defining your market, position, and goals. After defining exactly what is the best direction for the company's image, we begin working on design layouts that will eventually become the new image. This normally includes a logo, cards, a web site, and any number of other marketing materials.

Why should I choose Jabu for my design work?

We know there are a lot of design companies out there, so it is helpful to know why Jabu offers a better deal than most design companies. Below are just a few of the ways we feel that we are a better value than other design firms.

-The price of work at Jabu is well below any other design studio that is turning out the kind of quality work that we provide.

-Jabu has a track record of providing its clients with the highest standard of design professionalism. We don't sleep until you are 100% happy with our work.

-In 2002, Jabu Studio moved to Yucatan, Mexico. Due to the low cost of living we are also able to charge less for our work. Whereas most design firms charge roughtly $125/per hour, jabu charges about half of that. Incedentally, $150 was what my past studio charged for my work.

-When you work with Jabu Studio, you're working one-on-one with graphic designer Jason Buff. Normally, if you go to a typical design firm, you will talk with a project manager, but seldom with the person who is actually creating the graphics.

-Jabu Studio is available almost round the clock to take care of your needs. While many design companies make getting in contact a hassle, Jason is available through chat, telephone, and email almost every day, and if we recieve a message from you we will be back in touch asap.

The Long Version.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away...

I get a lot of comments about my last name. I'm a fairly big guy, so people generally assume its a nick name. At 6'4 and weighing in at about 230 lbs. I stick out a little here in Merida, where the average Joe is about 5.1 ft tall or so.

I was born in a suburb of the exciting motroplis known as Chicago. However, after 1/5 years of my life, my family decided that I should grow up amidst a southern twang, grits, and nascar and brought the fam down to Burlington, NC. Now, all said and done, I really love Burlington and I consider myself a Southerner. However I never really quite fit in with the rest of the South, and thus never really felt the need to stick around. I also, for better or worse, never developed a Southern twang. So I always felt I didn't fit in. I even remember faking a southern accent in High School sometimes just to be accepted.

I gained my first real exposure to the world at the age of 17. My mom, God Bless her, signed me up on a program to go to France to live for a month with a host family. It was, and still is, a defining moment for your humble servant. If anyone out there is actually reading this, I can't recomend enough getting the hell out of your country for a little while and seeing the world with different eyes. The younger you are, and the deeper you go, the more influential it will be in your life.

Upon graduation from High School, I attended a number of different colleges. I had no idea what I wanted to study or what I wanted to be. I remember taking Russian and German in the same semester just to have a challenge. I guess when you're in college you feel like you have a million years in your life to do whatever you want to do. I eventually became a history since it seemed the only classes I actually enjoyed.

Let me take a quick aside here and mention that I never even realized I was a creative person until I was about 23 or so. And yet, now that I look back at my early years, I can't believe I didn't start college in their Graphic Design department. I used to spend hours looking at magazines and putting advertisments on my walls. And yet...History Major. I guess maybe High School can put you on the wrong track sometimes. Anyway, long story short, listen to your inner voice.

So...ok...I lived in Europe for a year. Somehow I ended up in Finland for half of it...but it was good fun. Lots of snow and coffee. We also got a chance to go into Russia for a few weeks of classes. Russia is a subject all on its own, so I won't touch that.

I eventually came back to the states and decided to finish up my History Major at UNC Chapel Hill. I realized, due to being a transfer student I would need to take a lot more classes to qualify, so I decided to get a second BA in Media Communications. And WOW! Everything changed. Suddenly classes were fun. Instead of papers, assignments because documentaries and viewing films. We had the opportunity to work on computers (remember this is 1995). I remember seeing the internet for the first time and thinking "This is going to change everything."

Oddly enough, after Graduation, the last thing on my mind was working as a Graphic Designer. I was focused on being a documentary filmaker. In one of my classes, I had recently finished a documentary short called Carnies. Myself along with my friend Finneus Egan decided to shoot a piece about the carnies at the North Carolina State Fair. We ended up going to the fair every day and then sneaking in after dark and interviewing all of the workers. We would stay with them most of the night and then sometimes be kicked out. One night we slept on the carousel.

So, in 1996, I decided that my next documentary would be filming my tour around the U.S. with a final destination of San Francisco...or wherever I ended up. I hopped in my car, and headed straight south to Orlando Florida to visit my sister. Along the way, I started trying to shoot footage of people in Savannah and Charleston. Nothing much happened. Then through Orlando to New Orleans. Nothing much happened again. Down to Mcallen Texas. *Yawn!* And finally to Arizona where I stayed with my cousin. Actually, I was having a lot of fun, but my documentary...I realized...wasn't all that hot. Kind of like my own personal Magical Mystery Tour.

I arrived in San Franscico and started looking everywhere for jobs in production companies. After about 200 calls, I finally got a response from Circle Video in Burlingame. WOOO!!! Yeah! They said they could pay me $7 per hour to work as an assistant. Well, it was something. And I had no money whatesoever.

So, to move this on a little, I eventually learned to be a deposition videographer. I quick Circle Video and decided to strike out as a freelancer. Actually having a skill changes the playing field a little bit, so I got 2 calls this time. Both companies offering $25 per hour for my work. Now, this is only about a month after making $7, so something dawned on me that I never realized. Something that my father always told me, but I never got it. And now that I know this, I'm amazed how many people in the creative world don't understand. People pay you for a skill. They pay you to do something that you are trained to do. Its not about how smart you are, its about how good you are. And that, believe it or no, was a new concept. I guess coming from a college like UNC-Chapell Hill, I had never learned about the concept of skills. That was something left for Community Colleges I guess. But hey, I was really good at criticizing movies, and giving my opinion, and arguing my point of view. Which, in hindsight, has made me into a pompous ass. Thanks school.

So, back to this wonderful story. I ended up using the deposition money to get around and in 1998 moved to Los Angeles. Now, I don't want to say that I hated every second of living in L.A. But...I did. In fact, I have no pictures nor video of LA. I only have a foggy memory of being in the Lion's Den and being very paranoid. Some good came out of it. I bought my first computer. I worked at MTV and Paramount. I got to work on about 10 really horrible independent films. I made 0 friends and eventually had my car stolen. So...after about 1 year...I was done.

I eventually moved down with my Cousin in Atlanta. She was a graphic designer at a company that did work on some fairly big projects, including TNT, TNN, and CNN. I was really impressed with her quality of work
